Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: I am a mother to four adult children, two married and a grand-baby. I have had the pleasure of being at home with my kids, and their younger years were the best of my life. I would go back in a heartbeat to have that time again and probably do some things differently. I have had one hospital birth, one miscarriage, and three home births with a midwife. I have now attended the hospital and home births of friends and our grandchild and many clients. Postpartum is especially dear to me because I remember how little support I had from other women. Good support is vital to healthy recovery, parenting, and self esteem, and my favorite aspect of doula work is serving my postpartum clients.
What led you to become a Doula?: Becoming an empty nester in 2016, I knew I needed to find an outlet for my desires to nurture and affirm, whether that be with women in childbearing situations or in need of life-in-general encouragement. I have always had a special soft spot for women of young children and babes. I also wanted to be educated and informed to help my daughters, sons, daughters-in-law, and sons-in-law when they would inevitably encounter the many overwhelming decisions to be made when pregnant, laboring, and becoming a parent. It is my hope and prayer that my children and grandchildren will travel those life passages with informed decisions, empowerment, and joy.
