Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: Paramedic since 2015 (EMT 2012 - 2015), South Carolina Midwife Apprentice since 2016 / Midwife Student since 2013 and Doula since 2014.
What led you to become a Doula?: Ever since I was little, I wanted to do something with delivering babies. I was originally studying Pre-med to become an OB. On that path, I realized that I did not want to be limited under hospital protocols and regulations (locally, the OBs do not even enter the room until baby is crowning). I wanted to really get to know the mother and family and support them, not just walk in at the last minute. I found Midwifery to be exactly what I was looking for, and I am now an Apprentice. When I began attending births, I realized that most of what the midwife does during labor until close to the actual delivery is educate the woman about her options, support her choices, and assist with comfort measures. I took my first doula training as a way to learn more about the non-medical side and comfort measures. I discovered that I really love this role, and I enjoy being able to support clients through their pregnancy and labor.
