Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: Outside of being professionally trained and certified as a doula I have walked through some very beautiful, difficult, and unique paths as a mother, woman, friend, and support person in the birth industry that have brought me to a place of wanting to help all women know their strength and worth. My personal experiences and those as a support person for others in the birth world have led me to become a doula who loves to research to find those real answers, be the person that people can count on and lean on, and the doula who can relate to many different experiences and goals. My background in Special Education has given me the understanding for true research, knowledge of how to teach, a little extra patience and the ability to love ALL that I encounter.
What led you to become a Doula?: I have been in education my entire career path and have always had a nagging feeling in the back of my head and yearning in my heart to do something to help women. I just couldn't figure out what it was until I became a mother myself. Ever since I became pregnant with my oldest I have been so intrigued by the wonders of pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum. My personal experiences in those were traumatic and hard to walk through with my first and I knew that after I experienced a traumatic emergency c-section of my own I wished I had known more and had someone to answer all the questions I had from an unbiased perspective while truly offering support. When we became pregnant with our second I immediately started to dive into research on ALL things birth and VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean) and I quickly discovered "doula". To make a long story short we hired a doula for the birth of our second, achieved our birth goals (YAY VBAC!) and I would never do pregnancy, birth, and postpartum any other way ever again. The experience I had drew me so much further into the birth world I just knew I had to become a doula, it was very clear to me that this was how I would be able to satisfy that yearning to serve women in a specific way.
