Meet Your ProDoula

Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: I have experience as a Resident Aide in an assisted living facility as well as working in a maternity ward abroad. My desire to work with women strengthened during my semester abroad in Kenya where I was studying public health. Through this program, I was able to intern in a local hospital’s maternity ward. I also recently took my certification course in Detroit. This experience opened me eyes to the disparities that women of color face during the labor and delivery process, and I am passionate about providing inclusive and non-judgmental support to all women.

What led you to become a Doula?: I have been interested in birth work for as long as I can remember, but my time in Kenya really confirmed it. As I was working alongside nurses in the delivery room, I realized that the laboring person was all alone. Partners and other family members were not allowed into the delivery room and nurses were only there to provide medical care. That is when I took on the role of a doula, in a setting where doulas were not customary. Women labored without pain medication or emotional support. I was there to hold their hands, squeeze their backs, or pray over them per their request. Even with having a language barrier, the comfort of having someone to support them helped the women feel more comfortable. I am now very excited to work with women in the United States and provide support however I can.

What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:

My close friends and family would say that I am positive, optimistic, loving, adaptable, adventurous, and that I am passionate about helping and truly understanding other people.
