Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: I have a Bachelors in Health Sciences, specializing in Psychology has laid a strong foundation in understanding the transition a family undergoes when growing their family. With over 10 years as a certified doula, I have supported a spectrum of clients with varying needs and wants. My experience ranges from high risk clients expecting multiples, to clients planning a home water birth and everything in between.
What led you to become a Doula?: I was introduced to the midwifery model of care while in my final year at The University of Western Ontario. This care was drastically different than the medical model I was training towards, and felt compelled to provide a more comprehensive approach to supporting people. While continuing my research, I came across Doula work, liked that regardless of the health provider the pregnant person chose, they could also receive abundant support to fill in any gaps of their care.
What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:
My clients often say that my calm demeanour encourages them to stay more relaxed in situations that are challenging to do so. That isn’t to say, I can’t take charge when needed. I think its all about reading the room! Clients that also work in similar professions, such as nurses, are always amazed with the knowledge I pass on, in a way that is easy to absorb.
