Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work:
What led you to become a Doula?: I chose to take this journey because my birth experience turned out not to be what I envisioned. I was unhappy with my experience as a mother and even more disappointed as a Black woman. No healthcare professional was able to ease my mind or take me serious with all the complications I was enduring. When I was pregnant, I was hospitalized on three different occasions, and no one would give me an explanation as to why this was happening to me. I informed my midwife and her response was “It’s probably just a miscarriage. It doesn’t matter if you come in today or Monday because it’ll be the same result”... I will never forget what she said and I will never forget how it made me feel. What I needed was a doula; A support that was going to be a voice for me in the times of not knowing, rub my back to tell me it was okay, and take me seriously. I’m doing this for the mothers, but I’m especially doing it for the Black mothers that are being silenced in their time(s) of need because we are “too strong” to feel anything like pain or for the ones whose cries for help are being ignored because that black woman “doesn’t know what she’s talking about” or she’s “over exaggerating”.
