What led you to become a Doula?: When they asked back in grade school what I wanted to be when I grew up I answered, Cliff Huxtable. I loved the idea of taking care of women and babies and found myself on a career path doing just that in various clinical roles however it wasn’t until I became a mother I realized the impact and need of continuous judgment-free and informed care outside of prenatal visits and delivery and at that moment I decided to become a doula.
What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:
Kiara was the first experience my husband and I had with a doula. Although I had a fair understanding of what a doulas role is, I didn’t know how far their involvement could stretch. I already had one child that was 6yrs. Old at the time, but was lucky enough to have an amazing support system with my mom and sisters during his birth. In my second pregnancy, I would have my husband and cousin, which although are great support, is not the same as your mom and sisters. Kiara managed to help fill their roles.
I didn’t know Kiara personally prior to working with her, and she made me instantly feel comfortable. Her energy was very positive and kind. She advocated for me the way my mom would, she supported me like my sisters would have. she also introduced great pain management techniques as I was determined to birth naturally without any drugs. Kiara also did an awesome job of communicating with me every step of the way and making sure I full understanding of any medical interventions that occurred. Once I made the decision to take an epidural ( although it didn’t take, twice!) Kiara fully supported my decision and made sure I was comfortable with my choice. Kiara also made sure I was more aware of all of my options. From being able to walk around to alleviate my pain, different positions, and different birthing positions. She encourages me to say no to what I wanted and speak up for myself. Sometimes during delivery, the focus is more so on the baby.
Kiara focused on the baby, myself, and my husband. She encouraged my husband to take breaks when he needed to
(although he refused) and made sure to ask how was he doing. Kiara supporting my husband made it easier for him to focus more on me.
