Meet Your ProDoula

Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: I have had the privilege to work in education for over 31 years which in turn allowed me to meet the unique needs of children AND their families. I learned early on in my career that a child's success was deeply rooted through this hands joined approach. As cliché as it can sound, I always knew in my heart that working with families on such a personal level was a calling. It was not long before I realized I needed to find a way to care for myself better in order to be able to continue to offer authentic support to my families. I found my way to yoga, mindfulness and breathing practices. I began teaching some strategies to students, co-workers and created/delivered trainings in our school district. It had such a positive impact on my health and relationships, I made the decision to earn my 200hr yoga certification and 6 months ago successfully completed my 500hr yoga certification. These practices ensure that I am 100 percent available to offer balance, perspective and unconditional support to the families who have trusted me with one of the most sacred experiences of their lives.

What led you to become a Doula?: I feel that I have been completely led to this profession by my heart. It was not something I sought out but more so an chance opportunity that came to me. I said yes to a friend who wondered if I could help her with a family who needed some support and as they say, "the rest is history!" That yes, led to another family and then another. It was then I realized how being with these families filled me with so much energy, fulfillment and curiosity to learn more. My husband and I have 5 grown children that also include a set of twin boys. In turn, they have started families of their own. Since I retired two years ago, I was available to walk beside them as they became parents. Like the families I have been privileged to support, it opened my eyes to the new challenges facing our families and the power that a support system can have on that experience. It all seemed so hard in so many unique ways. That is why naming my business "Soft Start" resonated with me. Entering this experience does not have to be so hard moment after moment, it can be soft and entered with ease so that the most beautiful moments are not missed and lasting memories are made.

What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:

Melissa has exceeded out expectations. In a very short time, Melissa has become someone we trust, rely on and love to be around. When she is in our home, it feels natural and not like “someone else” is there. She intuitively manages to meet my needs as a parent/human, as well our growing families needs.

Melissa created a bond and comfort level within our family almost immediately. She is a compassionate listener and truly wants to support our family in meeting their personal goals/needs. We feel grateful to have been able to include her in this journey with us. Although we tease her that we do not want to share her, we often refer her to our family and friends with the greatest of confidence.

Melissa has been a true gift to our family. She can juggle the many needs of our family with ease while making everyone feel included and loved. She feels irreplaceable at this point.
