Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: Since childhood I have felt maternal instincts and always wanted to be a mother. Babysitting throughout my teen years and becoming a mom at a relatively young age (21) has given me decades of experience working with children of all ages and raising children of my own. I've also always been someone who feels compassion and empathy toward others who may or may not be close to me. Occasionally I may not even know a person but heard their story and feel it to my core. I have a desire to support others and allow myself to meet them emotionally where they are (to an extent). These qualities put together put me in a perfect position to support mothers, families and babies during their early days of postpartum and beyond.
What led you to become a Doula?: Being a mother of three with my own struggles with different aspects of postpartum, as well as a military wife living a life of possible isolation with each move, I became interested initially in training for lactation counseling. I was completely unsuccessful with my first, but through educating myself and reaching out for help when needed successfully breastfed my third to 14 months. Once I finished my CLC other parts of the birth community piqued my interest. I decided to start with postpartum doula training to support families in what is such a big transition from pregnancy to bringing baby home. And I am not necessarily done there. I love seeing the shift currently occurring in the way people view pregnancy, birth and postpartum and am open to whatever my path leads me to.
What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:
I am quite fresh in the birth community and have yet to receive reviews from clients. However one of the biggest compliments I have received throughout my life is that I almost always have a calm presence even in chaos or that stressful situations don’t seem to affect me. Given the often overwhelming nature of early postpartum I plan to lean into this quality when working with my clients.
