Are you a professional birth worker who is compassionate, accountable, and available? We want to meet you!

Hello Birth professional!

Hello! At Boston Area Doulas, we take pride in providing our clients with compassionate, evidence-based and non-judgmental support.

Kathleen—Boston Area Doulas founder and agency owner— takes care of the marketing, attracting clients, invoicing, and having the initial phone call with clients to see what they’re looking for. You get to focus on the heart of doula work— relationships and support. We offer sustainable pay for doula work and know that it is important to be part of a team that supports one another and is always learning and growing. Our doula team also offers independent contractor a space to debrief births, discuss best practices, and hold space to process challenging situations.

Direct service with families is something that I’ve always loved. I founded Boston Area Doulas in December 2020 as a solo birth and postpartum doula, after 14 years as a classroom teacher and instructional coach. I was inspired to become a doula after a transformational experience with my postpartum doula in 2017. I said yes to all the things– births, daytime visits, overnights, classes. I loved helping people find their confidence and strength! Over time, my husband began to travel more for work, my capacity for travel to clients was more limited with school drop off at 8 am and pick up at 2 pm, and demand for my doula services outpaced my individual capacity…enter the agency model! I felt (and still feel) a deep responsibility to make sure doulas were getting the work they would like, and that families were getting the care they deserve. It has been such a joy and honor to see the impact of our team, supporting over 700 families in the last few years. Ultimately, though, I have really missed the day-to-day interfacing with families in their homes. I thought about continuing as an agency owner while taking on my doula and lactation work, but did not want to compromise quality and my ability to do both things with all my heart. When I commit to something, I tend to go all in :).

Who is Jane? I met Jane a little over two years ago when she moved in two houses down the street from me. After getting to know each other, I was Jane’s birth doula for her first pregnancy. Since then, we have become friends and discussed life– kids, family, work, and what fuels us. Together, we realized there was a serendipitous opportunity–I missed direct service with families and wanted someone to continue the work of Boston Area Doulas, and Jane was eager to jump into work in the perinatal space, and leverage her extraversion, love of talking to people, and skill in business development, marketing, handling contracts, working with all types of people and personalities.

We are looking for doulas who:
*Can provide nonjudgmental, unbiased support to families, rather than preferring a particular type of birth, parenting approach, or newborn care philosophy.
*Proudly serve families of all races, sexual orientations, gender identities, marital status, ages, immigration status and family configurations.
*Are certified in the domain they’re serving (birth and/or postpartum), or are interested in finishing their certification. Reach out to Kathleen (kathleen@bostonareadoulas.com) to learn about options for certification. Please reach out to Kathleen if you have financial concerns to certification.
*Have an LLC OR DBA in the state you live. Kathleen can give you more information on this.
*Can pass an external background check.
*Have at least 3 families they’ve supported who can speak to their qualifications

At this moment, we are looking to add the right people for the following roles:
*birth doulas (working in a two-person shared call schedule to support a pregnant person) with at least 5-10 births experience
*daytime postpartum doula (can do at least 2 4-hr shifts a week) with at least 6-12 months of postpartum doula experience
*overnight postpartum doula (could do at least 2 or 3 8-hr nights a week) with at least 6-12 months of postpartum doula experience
